These signs at the business loop's north end show that the loop turns onto the on-ramp to
northbound I-35; note the black-on-white arrow under the loop shield. The signs are
located along East 13th Street at the interchange with I-35, facing east. More photos along
the loop can be found on
Jeff Morrison's site.

This wide exit sign on southbound I-35 shows the business loop (it doesn't appear on northbound
I-35).

|
On northbound I-35, the business loop is signed at the US 30 interchange instead.
|
|
Southbound, though, there's no presence of the loop because of its signage at the 13th
Street interchange (business loops are usually signed in only one exit each direction).
The sign in the middle, while relatively new, displays an older style of advance exit
signage; down arrows usually don't appear on such signs anymore.

This sign on northbound I-35 approaching US 30 needs an explanation. An "Ames – NEXT 2 EXITS" sign was originally here when I-35 was built. However, the Des Moines Tribune of August 18, 1972, reported that the sign misled some drivers who thought that the "next 2 exits" were the cloverleaf ramps at US 30, one of which led drivers away from Ames. The Highway Commission later agreed to change the sign to what is present today.

New signs in Clearview listing Iowa State University's campus attractions were placed along I-35 and US 30 in 2007.

Go south on Duff Avenue at the interchange with US 30 and you'll see the Business Loop I-35/US
30 multiplex BGS that was displayed earlier. Go north, though, and you'll see this distance
sign mounted on the overpass -- a type of sign that is usually mounted on the ground.
|
|
Turn left from northbound Duff Avenue at this intersection and you'll end up on 13th Street,
but turn right and you'll end up on East 13th Street. West of here, addresses on 13th don't
contain the "East" directional.

|
Go west on US 30 and you'll see a typical exit sign at Elwood Drive, but go east and you would once find this unusual fork sign before the off-ramp. (The only other place I have seen this is at the eastbound US 20/County Road Y13 exit at Farley.) The original sign (top) was replaced in the fall of 2007 as Elwood Drive was renamed University Boulevard; the new sign (bottom) is wide enough to need four posts to support it.
